‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 6 Rumors, Spoilers: Main Character Refuses to Sign Renewal Contract?

As The CW gets ready to air the first episode of 'The Vampire Diaries' Season 6 on October 2, some fans are wondering if this is going to be the last season of the show.

Rumors began to surface about a series cancellation because of the relationship status of the lead actors and actresses. Even though the show has received good viewership and high ratings, some feel that former couple co-stars Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder cannot work together anymore.

Reports say that although Dobrev and Somerhalder tried to remain professional after their break up, things have been awkward, since Somerhalder's new girlfriend Nikki Reed often visits the set.

In addition to this, Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore, allegedly stated that the hit fantasy series might really be saying goodbye after the sixth season.

"It very well could be our last [season]," Somerhalder said.

The actor added that the upcoming season already has a sense of finality to it.

"I think now that there's a finality to it, everyone's really realizing that this is a very important time in our lives. We created some very cool storytelling," Somerhalder added.

Rumors about the show's impending end started when reports came out saying that one of the three main stars, which includes Dobrev, Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, allegedly did not sign for the seventh season.

The cast member who did not sign is "unsure whether he or she wants to continue," according to a source from E! Online. The cast member's indecision is reportedly crucial, since the absence of one of the main actors may result to the network cancelling the show.

There are also other reports that say the show might continue even without the three stars by focusing the story on other characters, including Caroline, Bonnie, or Alaric, among others.

The show's executive producer Julie Plec, however, gave hope to the fans of the show when she said ending the series is not even in their plans yet.

"You could ask 10 different people that question and you'd get 10 different answers, in terms of how long the life of the show is. Warner Bros. would say, '17 seasons!' And I think I would say, 'Seven!' [Laughs] Presumably we'll land somewhere closer to my wishes or theirs, depending on the circumstances," Plec told Entertainment Weekly.

The Episode 1 entitled "I'll Remember' of 'The Vampire Diaries' premieres Oct. 2 on The CW.
