'The New Mutants' Movie News: Upcoming 'X-Men' Spin-Off Film Finds Director, Josh Boone
Fox previously announced an X-Men spin-off film they had in the works, and today the project finally has a director to helm.
Josh Boone reportedly will be at the forefront of this film; he's most notable for his work in directing 'The Fault In Our Stars.'
The spin-off will be titled 'The New Mutants,' and will serve to expand the cinematic world Fox has already established with the X-Men franchise. The comic series it's based off of introduces a bunch of new mutants that are unfamiliar in the universe.
"The New Mutants were created for Marvel by writer Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod, and the characters first appeared in 1982. A year later, they got their own comic book. The team was comprised of a group of young teenage mutants training at Professor X's school of the gifted," writes Geek Tyrant.
The film will largely focus on a younger set of mutants in this film. Specific characters have not yet been announced, however the popular Deadpool character was introduced in this comic series, so it isn't farfetched that he could play a role in this.
Producer Simon Kinberg had this to say about the project:
"We're so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters."
'The New Mutants' doesn't yet have a release date, but it adds to the long list of X-Men movies set to release in the next couple years.
"Fox has done well mining its X-Men franchise. Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool with Tim Miller directing, and Bryan Singer is directing X-Men: Apocalypse for 2016. James Mangold and Hugh Jackman are also doing another Wolverine installment with Hugh Jackman. Behind those is Gambit, a movie that has Channing Tatum attached to star. Those are the current X-Men priorities but it is proactive of Fox to keep new films in the pipeline and to re-engage Boone, who's repped by CAA and attorney Gregory Slewett. Gwaltney is also CAA," writes Deadline.
