'The Mindy Project' News: Cast Shares What Hulu ‘Freedom’ Will Mean to Season 4

What does the move to Hulu mean to the cast of The Mindy Project?

Mindy Kalling, Chris Messina, Ike Barinholtz, Ed Weeks, Xosha Roquemore, Beth Grant, and Matt Warbuton went on stage at the Television Critics Association summer press tour and shared about the network move - what it means to them personally, as well as the show itself.

Mindy said that she's "so grateful" to Hulu, and she's raring to go to make the show "better than it's ever been."

There would be many notable changes, however, one of which is the change from a four-act show to a three-act one.

The cast was quick to assure that the tone and storyline will be maintained despite this structural change.

A little more freedom is also what the cast foresee, particularly in writing the script. Ike mentioned a line they had written that read, "Jesus, you're strong".

Fox had mixed "Jesus ... " and even "Jeez" whereas under Hulu they would not have to focus on such issues.

Mindy, however, said that having to hint at certain things rather than blatantly stating them was a creative challenge that she relished.

Another big change the cast talked about was the fact that they were now operating in streaming mode, which means, among other things, that filming would be on a weekly schedule as opposed to pre-filming the whole season in one go.

Mindy said she appreciated this, stating that, "maybe it's old-fashioned, but I like a Christmas episode airing in December."

As to the plot and guest stars, fans of the popular exploits of the quirky Ob/Gyn should expect lots of twists and turns, as well as surprise faces.

In a sneak peek of the premiere of season 4, it was revealed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be playing a show producer married to Mindy in a hilarious "Sliding Door" version of her life.

In the typical offbeat banter that fans have come to know and love, they'll trade lines like, "These chips are terrible," to which the reply is, "That is a bowl of seashells, babe."

The storyline would follow the premise that Mindy didn't, in fact, date Danny, but dated Gordon-Levitt's character instead.

She would see where Danny ended up, which was with her celebrity doppelganger, Frieda Pinto.

The Mindy Project debuts on Hulu on Tuesday, Sept. 15, and it will run 26 episodes, aired weekly.
