'The Little Mermaid' Movie News: Sofia Coppola Opts Out of Directing Disney Live Action Adaptation

Recent news has reported a falling out between Disney and director Sofia Coppola for the live action 'The Little Mermaid' project announce over a year ago.

Details on the decision weren't revealed, however it was stated that it was based on "creative differences."

Coppola's previous work had many fans believe she was a perfect fit for the undertaking. Strong female leads encompass most of her filmography.

"Universal and Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are pressing ahead, with a Caroline Thompson rewrite on the story of the mermaid willing to make a Faustian bargain to live on land after she falls in love. Previous drafts were done by Fifty Shades Of Grey scribe Kelly Marcel and Shame scribe Abi Morgan, and Joe Wright was at one time eyeing this to direct," writes Deadline.

This project just marks one of many properties that Disney plans to turn into live action adaptations. Over the last couple months there were a number announced to be in the works.

"Disney has lined up an aggressive slate of live-action adaptations of their classic animated films, and although The Little Mermaid is perhaps most associated with The Mouse House, this project hails from Universal, who is clearly attempting to cash in on the big box office prospects of revisiting these characters in live-action. Cinderella, Maleficent, Snow White and The Huntsman, and especially Alice in Wonderland have given studios plenty of reasons to want to try to capitalize on this trend, so we'll see who Universal taps to direct The Little Mermaid now that Coppola has headed back to dry land," writes Geek Tyrant.

'The Little Mermaid' project doesn't yet have a release date.
