'The Last Ship' Season 5 News Update: TV Series Renewed For A Fifth Season

After being given the green light for a season 4 back in July, "The Last Ship" has been renewed for a fifth season.

Starring Eric Dane as USS Nathan James captain Tom Chandler, "The Last Ship" follows Chandler and his crew as they search for a cure for a mysterious virus that has almost annihilated the entire humanity. The second and third seasons of the series consisted of 13 episodes each, but the upcoming fourth and fifth seasons will consist of only 10 episodes each.

According to TNT executive Sarah Aubrey, the first three seasons of the series took viewers on an exciting ride so there is no reason to not renew it for two more seasons.

"We look forward to watching the cast and production team ratchet up the drama, action and suspense even more over the next two seasons through summer 2018," she said.

Earlier this 2016, the premiere of season 3 was deferred due to the tragic mass shooting that took place at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida and left 49 people dead. According to reports, TNT decided to reschedule the season 3 premiere to a later date since it contained a scene where gunmen attacked a nightclub and killed several people, too.

Meanwhile, "The Last Ship" star John Pyper-Ferguson recently talked about Dr. Rachel Scott, who was presumably killed in the final episode of season 2.

In his interview with TV Line, the actor said, "Yeah, it's definitley an unresolved relationship, but it's kinda like life, isn't it?" he said. When asked about the possibility of Dr. Scott being alive somewhere, the actor answered, "I think ['The Last Ship' creator] Steve Kane has been absolutely forthcoming about that and said no, she's gone. So, as far as I know and Tex knows, it's a done deal."

"The Last Ship" airs every Sunday night on TNT.
