Jodi Arias Trial Update: Murder Case Continues, Defense Lawyers for Dismissal of Death Penalty

The Jodi Arias-Travis Alexander murder case continues even as Arias' lawyers gave the court 17 reasons for dismissal of the death penalty.

The retrial of the convicted continues as a decision on the sentence has yet to be made. Arias will still face the possibility of a death sentence as Judge Sherry Stephens denies a motion from the defendants to take the death penalty off the table.

The sentencing retrial was supposed to wrap up one month ago. Instead, Stephens told the jury to expect this case to run through next month, says the Huffington Post.

Arias was convicted of murdering her boyfriend, Alexander on June 4, 2008, in Mesa, Arizona. The victim has suffered multiple stab wounds, a slit throat and a gunshot to the head. Arias admitted to killing Alexander in self-defense.

On May 8, 2013, she was found guilty of first-degree murder by a Maricopa County Superior Court jury. Later she was found guilty of committing the murder in an especially cruel manner, which may be the reason behind her impending death penalty.

The defense, however, seems hopeful as it focuses on sex, secrets and religion to get Arias out of the death sentence. The defense attorneys lay their claims on the victim being a man torn between his devout Mormon faith and his secret sexual urges, says The Associated Press.

The defense claims that the police detectives have deleted pornography files from Alexander's computer. The prosecution, however, denies such claims. Speaking on the concerns raised over the destruction of such evidence, Prosecutor Juan Martinez said his office had the computer reanalyzed just this week, and it showed the defense claims are false. "It confirmed that he had not accessed any of the (pornographic) sites that they're claiming he accessed," Martinez said, according to the Fox News.
