'The Jinx' News: Robert Durst Indicted on Weapon and Drug Charges in Louisiana
Robert Durst has recently been indicted by a grand jury on drug and weapons charges. This comes as Durst's lawyers had been attempting to get a Louisiana court to drop its case against him.
Durst was arrested on March 14th in New Orleans, and has been held without bond since then. The real estate heir was the focus of the HBO docuseries The Jinx and is being held in a medical unit at a correctional facility outside of New Orleans.
Lawyers for the 71-year-old had been fighting to have drug and weapons charges thrown out of court in Louisiana so he could be released for extradition to California to face a murder charge in the 2000 execution style death of his long time friend Susan Berman, according to reports from People.
However, he was indicted by a grand jury on last Wednesday on two Louisiana gun charges for possessing a firearm illegally and as a felon, as well as carrying a weapon with a controlled substance.
Durst was faced with these charges after agents discovered five ounces of marijuana in his hotel room at the J. W. Marriott in New Orleans, along with a .38 caliber revolver.
"According to court testimony, an FBI agent recognized Durst in a New Orleans hotel March 14 and escorted him to his hotel room," says the Associated Press.
"Durst was arrested on the Los Angeles warrant and arrested separately on the weapons charges the next day," reports People.
Durst's attorneys argue that his arrest and the search of his hotel room were conducted improperly. The case is now before Criminal District Court Judge Franz Ziblich.
