‘The Interview' New York Premiere Canceled: U.S Theaters Pulling Upcoming Film Screenings
Organizers have cancelled the New York premiere of 'The Interview', an upcoming comedy movie showcasing an attempt by the CIA to assassinate the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. This has happened in the wake of the recent hacks to Sony's database allegedly by a hacker group calling themselves, Guardians of Peace.
For those that may not know, 'The Interview' stars Seth Rogen and James Franco, and is slated for a Dec. 25 released in theaters across the U.S.
A report by Variety says that a spokesperson for Landmark's Sunshine Cinema informed them that they decided to cancel the premiere of the movie in New York following a threat from the hacker group on Tuesday that referred to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The threat accompanied a latest set of documents which seemed to have been stolen from Sony.
Ironically, the hackers described the threat and the leaked documents including emails from Sony co-chairman and CEO Michael Lynton, as a "Christmas Gift."
Meanwhile, Sony Pictures informed all the theaters on Tuesday that it would go ahead with the release of 'The Interview', but the company would certainly support the decision of the individual theaters if they chose not to screen the film.
A report from Associated Press that said that Carmike Cinemas, a company that runs 278 theaters throughout the U.S, was the first to decide against screening the film. The company said that all its theaters have canceled the screenings on Thursday.
On the other hand, the U.S security agencies that are probing into the Sony hack ruled out the possibility of the hacker group actually carrying out the threat. They said that there is no convincing intelligence that suggests that the hackers are planning to disrupt the screening of the movie. However, police across the country vowed to take extra measures to ensure security.
Meanwhile, IBTimes says that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security told the agency, "At this time there is no credible intelligence to indicate an active plot against movie theaters within the United States."
