'The Hateful Eight' Released Two Days Earlier World-Wide In An Extended 70mm Roadshow Format [Trailer]
"The Hateful Eight" was originally slated to open have a special screening on Christmas Day in an extended 70mm Roadshow format on 100 screens before opening world-wide on January 8, 2016.
The Weinstein Company recently announced that the film would go world-wide on Friday, January 1. But there seems to be an earlier date now since the film will open December 30. Because of the earlier date, TWC could take advantage of a five-day opening weekend.
The reason why TMC went through a lot of considerations when it came to the release of its latest Quentin Tarantino film is because of the demand that is currently present. The cinemas that project 70mm films despite being always crowded with viewers, could suffice the demand for the film.
According to The Wrap, the limited release of the extended version of "Hateful Eight" grossed around 5.6 million at the domestic box office alone. The 100 plus theaters that currently projects the film in its special Roadshow 70mm format still continues to bring in huge numbers.
"To see this film open at over $56,000 per screen in an amazingly crowded holiday box office has us all incredibly excited," said Erik Lomis, president of TWC film distribution. "While we are beyond thrilled with the limited release numbers, the demand from movie-goers to see this film has exceeded our capabilities in 70mm, so we're greatly looking forward to bringing it to more theaters and cities and give Tarantino fans across the country the chance to experience this brilliant, intensely fun piece of filmmaking."
Another reason why it may also be necessary for TWC to have an earlier release is because of the continuous rise of illegal downloads of the film. TWC must capitalize on the earlier release before it really takes a toll on their film's overall gross.
