Mariana has a hard time dealing with the pressure of a school competition in episode 8 of "The Fosters" season 4, titled "Girl Code."

In the previous episode, Mariana took Jesus' medications as she felt so stressed out over the upcoming First Robotics Regionals. Since many of her teammates begged out of the competition, she was left to do all the work.

In episode 8, Lena worries about her daughter even more as Mariana's competitive spirit goes to another level. Mariana and Jesus competes at the science event in Southern California, and Mariana starts to become so competitive that she finds it difficult to deal with the pressure. This causes her mom to worry about her.

The episode also focuses on Callie as she gets a warning from the police after threatening Patrick Malloy in the previous episode. It can be recalled that during their confrontation in episode 7, Callie told Patrick that she knew about his involvement in the case of Kyle. The episode showed that after their confrontation, Patrick immediately talked to someone over the phone to inform the person from the other line that a woman named Callie knows about the deal.

A sneak preview for the episode showed Mariana, Jesus and their other teammates entering the hall of the school competition. When the defending champion of the competition from another school appears, their coach tells them that the said team is full of controversies, spiking up the competitiveness of Mariana.
