‘The Dark Tower’ New Movie News: Sony to Produce Adaptation of Popular Stephen King Novel Series
Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced that they're interested in making a movie adaptation for "The Dark Tower' novel series by Stephen King.
Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman, Tom Rothman, has found a franchise to fund and finance the making of the movie out of the novel series. Reportedly, MRC will be doing the co-financing of the project.
The novel revolves around a world filled with magic and the central character is a gunslinger called Roland Deschain, the script of which is being written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. The movie follows the adventures of Roland in a far-off realm that's part horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and western. Also, according to Deadline, a complementary TC series is also being developed by MRC.
The script will be based on the first book of the "The Dark Tower' series, "The Gunslinger.' Reportedly, the film will be a blend of horror and fantasy.
Talking about the development of the movie, Rothman said, "There are a few projects out there that compare with the scope, vision, complex characters and the fully drawn world that Stephen King has created with The Dark Tower. I am a giant fan. And, as Stephen himself does, we love the direction that Akiva and Jeff have taken. This is a great opportunity for a director to put his or her stamp on a cool global franchise," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Also, according to the news report, the motion picture was in the development for years at Universal with ambitious plans for three movies and TV series, but eventually a high budget brought it down even as it attracted talent such as Javier Bardem.
