T.J. Dillashaw vs Dominick Cruz News: UFC Superfight Set for Jan. 17
UFC president Dana White announced on Wednesday night's edition of "UFC Tonight" a massive bantamweight clash, when he confirmed that bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw will be facing former title holder Dominick Cruz on the first ever championship fight to air on FOX Sports 1. The event is set for Jan. 17 in Boston, in what is likely to be UFC Fight Night 81.
"If you really look at Dominick Cruz, he never really lost the title," White said of the former champion who has spent the better part of the last four years recovering from various knee injuries.
"The superfight for T.J. right now is Cruz. Cruz has never been beat (in a title fight) and really is still the champion. He got stripped of the title because he can't stay healthy."
As noted by MMA Junkie, Dillashaw is coming off his second consecutive title defense last July, stopping once invincible former champion Renan Barao for a second time. Since entering title contender status, Dillashaw has dominated all competition, and has won all three of his UFC title fights by way of knockout.
Cruz, meanwhile, was the promotion's first UFC bantamweight champion, inheriting the title after the WEC closed its doors. He had two title defenses - against Uriah Faber and current UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson - before a slew of injuries stopped a promising career on his tracks. He has only fought once since being stripped of the title, knocking out Takeya Mizugaki in 61 seconds last September before succumbing to injury yet again. Cruz's last loss inside the cage came way back in 2007 in a WEC title fight against Uriah Faber. The 30-year-old is currently on an 11-fight win streak.
Dillashaw, for his part, looks like a completely different fighter from when he lost a split decision to Raphael Assuncao back in October of 2013. After bouncing back from that loss to beat Mike Easton, he shocked the world by dominating a previously undefeated Renan Barao for the bantamweight title.
