The finale of season 10 of Supernatural had the Winchester brothers engulfed by the darkness, an evil force that dates back to even before the Bible.
Photos of season 11 show that the brothers survive, however things will not be smooth sailing as they continue their fight against the dark force.
Supernatural executive producer Jeremy Carver recently shared some upcoming highlights of the next season with TV Line, hinting that Sam and Dean will find they need assistance in their fight.
This might force them to create some unholy alliances with characters from their dark pasts.
"They're going to have to confront some figures from their past. They're going to have to make some unexpected and unholy alliances involving folks from their past, which will have personal ramifications," Carver said.
The brothers will face the darkness again, attempting to discover its wants, its capabilities and its weaknesses.
"There's a lot of mystery [as to not only] what or who the darkness is, but what the darkness wants," Carver elaborates, "That's something the show takes its time building and playing with, and it really causes the brothers some fits."
The darkness will also manifest into a physical entity, and there have been whispers that Amara, a femme fatale, might be the physical form it takes.
Emily Swallow has been slated to play the role. Carver chose to remain mum on this topic, however.
Carver did share that Crowley, the king of hell, has not let go of what he perceives as a wrong done to him by Rowena.
He will revenge himself, meanwhile figuring out how to deal with a hell that's also been taken over by the darkness.
Castiel the angel will also be afflicted with conflicts of his own. While helping the Winchesters fight the darkness, he has to find a way to get rid of the attack dog spell cast on him by Rowena.
"So for Castiel, we're going to see him in something of a vulnerable state early on in the season," Carver says.
Season 11 of The CW's Supernatural will premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 9:00 p.m. ET.
