'Supergirl' Cast News, Rumors: Lead Actress Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl Costume Revealed
"Supergirl" is the highly anticipated and upcoming superhero TV show from CBS that fans have been dying for. As most of the cast has been called and production for the pilot started this week, fans are eager to see more. On that note, two images of Melissa Benoist, who will play Supergirl, in costume, were revealed Friday.
The images depict a very confident and determined Kara Zor-El in her classic red, blue and gold outfit. The costume has stayed true to the heroine's look of modesty yet powerfulness that the heroine has always portrayed.
Oscar-winner Colleen Atwood designed Supergirl's costume. Atwood also did the costume designs for DC's "The Arrow" and "The Flash." In a statement, Atwood said, "In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today."
Fans were happy that Atwood stuck to the classic design. Later depictions of Supergirl show her outfit as low-cut and bare midriff. Instead of focusing to be a sex symbol, Atwood's nostalgic take on the costume gives fans a sigh of relief.
On her Twitter account, Benoist captioned the two photos, "THIS. I still can't believe I am wearing the House of El coast of arms." "Supergirl" will follow Kara as she is finally ready to embrace her role as a hero instead of hiding her true self.
Benoist stars in the show along with David Harewood, Chyler Leigh, Mehcad Brooks, Calista Flockhart and Laura Benanti. Dean Cain from 1990s "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Super" and Helen Slater from the 1984 Supergirl film will join the cast, but their roles remain a mystery.
"Supergirl" has yet to have a premiere date announced. Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg from "Arrow" and "The Flash" will write and produce the show alongside Ali Adler from "Chuck" and "Glee" and Sarah Schechter from "Pan."
