'Supergirl' Cast News, Rumors: 'Glee' Star Melissa Benoist Takes on Titular Role
Melissa Benoist was a remarkable singer and actress on Glee, but it was time for her to trade in her high school career for a much more superhuman one. The former Glee star has just landed the lead female role of Supergirl on a show called - you guessed it - Supergirl.
Benoist will join the growing community of the powerful women leading television shows, including Marvel's Agent Carter's Hayley Atwell and Scandal's Kerry Washington. There is a movement of strong, complex female role models. Now, Benoist could lead them all as the super-strong, super-fast, super cool Superwoman. Is she ready to lead the way?
Supergirl will focus on a girl named Kara Zoe-El, a woman who is an alien that escaped from Krypton and incidentally, Superman's cousin. The 24-year-old woman is ready to use her superhuman abilities to help the people of Earth, but she will obviously have to get through a lot of drama first. Like Superman, the new CBS show is based on DC Comics.
Melissa Benoist's future role was once played by Laura Vandervoot and Helen Slater. She will have quite the legacy to uphold. Nina Tassler, the CBS chair, knew she had her work cut out for her when she looked for Supergirl.
"She embodied so many of the characteristics of classic female heroines on the network... We fell in love with the pitch," Tassler had explained before she found Benoist. "We're looking for quality, charisma. She's got to be every woman."
Dates haven't been revealed yet, but we have an idea of what the costume might look like. Is anyone else excited to see Melissa Benoist in the classic "S" costume?
