'Supergirl' Cast News: Melissa Benoist Reveals Costume Photo via Twitter

After quite a long wait, CBS has finally revealed the first photos of actress Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor El for the upcoming series 'Supergirl'.

It's apparent that the network took a fairly conventional route with the costume "a la" the signature short cape and red skirt. It also closely resembles the 'Man of Steel' Superman design quite a bit. The colors are all very conservative and not bright and popping like most of the classic comic books suggest.

The costume was designed by Colleen Atwood, the same mind behind the costumes for CW's 'The Flash' and 'Arrow'.

"In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past," says Atwood, "but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today."

"Written by Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg based on the DC Comics characters and directed by Glen Winter, Supergirl - from WBTV and Berlanti Prods. - centers on Kara Zor-El (Benoist). Since arriving on Earth, the Krypton-born Kara has been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she always was meant to be," writes Deadline.

There is still currently no release date scheduled for the CBS 'Supergirl' series.
