'Supergirl' Cast News: Actor Mehcad Brooks to Play Jimmy Olsen, Alongside 'Glee' Star Melissa Benoist

It would seem CBS has finally settled on the female lead for their superhero crime drama, "Supergirl." It will be no other than Glee actress Melissa Benoist sporting the "S" on her chest for this new adaptation.

However, he's not the only addition to the cast of the up and coming CBS TV series. The Hollywood Reporter went ahead and confirmed that actor Mehcad Brooks will be taking on the role of Jimmy Olsen on the show.

"Supergirl" will adopt the original origin story of Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin who possesses the same kind of powers and capabilites.

For those that may not know, the actor is well known for his role in the popular television series, "Necessary Roughness."

Stepping into the "Supergirl" plot, THR went ahead and provided some insight into what viewers can expect to see when they watch the show for the first time.

"The hourlong drama... centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she has been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be," writes The Hollywood Reporter.

CBS's entertainment chairman, Nina Tassler, commented on the kind of actress she believed the role needed:

"She's got to be an every woman. She's got to be specific. She's got to be a terrific actor. [It's] looking for someone who embodies both the freshness and the exuberance of being a young woman in today's challenging climate and being someone who can carry this kind of series on her shoulders. It's a big, big show."

Benoist hasn't been featured in any big action roles, but the show may not take on that kind of tone. It's being pitched as a crime drama, so most of the show will play off her solving low-level crimes and perhaps not jumping into huge elaborate space battles.

The show is also projected to be placed in CW's "Arrow" universe, along with "The Flash". Those shows haven't gone over the top in terms of elaborateness, unless you want to count The Flash's meta-human theme, but that's more commonly kept on it's respective show.

There is still no release date on the project, but now that they have some of the cast confirmed we can expect the project to get underway soon.
