Sum 41's Deryck Whibley Talks Alcoholism in First Interview Since Overdose; Never Realized How Destructive the Rock Star Lifestyle Was (VIDEO)
Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley made headlines last month after an overdose of alcohol nearly killed him and cost him everything he has accomplished in his life. He recently sat down for an interview on CBC News and explained how bad his addiction really became.
"I'm kind of one of those people that I push myself probably a little too hard with work and with playtime as well and at some point, it just all catches up with you, I guess," Whibley said in the interview.
The singer thought alcohol was a better vice than hard drugs so did not see much wrong with it. In the interview he said he was having a bottle of Vodka delivered to his house daily.
"I never felt anything weird, everything just felt normal ... I just thought: it's just alcohol, it can't really harm you that much. But sure enough, it can," Whibley said, "You justify your partying and alcohol at the time "” to say, 'Well, if I wasn't drinking, I wouldn't have written this song,' but it's kind of bull****, really."
During all these years of abuse he remained touring and writing songs, and was seemingly functional. Whibley could not identify his problem because it never really affected any part of his day to day functions.
His life came crashing down after he took a sip of a drink and collapsed. When he woke up he was in a hospital and had no idea what was going on.
"I didn't really know why I was there, what was going on and the severity of it. It just sort of all, kind of hit me all at once," Whibley said.
"I've been close to death many times and I've always sort of skated through and this one was the closest I think," said Whibley, "They were just telling me my liver had failed and my kidneys had collapsed "¦ I had pretty much just damaged everything inside of me."
Whibley is still in recovery, but is happy to have avoided the same fate as the late Jim Morrison. He said a number of other musicians have reached out and have been supportive of his sobriety including his ex-wife Avril Lavigne.
What makes his condition most scary is that doctors told him one more drink could kill him.
"When everything that happened to me after years and years of drinking so much, I never realized that I was taking it that far, I never realized that I would end up in the hospital like that," he said after posting the details on his website, "I just wanted our fans to know that it can happen to you, too, if you're not careful."
The 34-year-old remains optimistic about his future, and looks forward to writing music and getting back out on the road.
"I do miss playing right now. It's been long enough now, I'm getting that itch, I want to be back out on tour," he said. "All I know is I'm not putting out anything until I really feel like it's great."
