‘Straight Outta Compton’ News: Stays on Top of Box Office for Second Week
The boys from Compton keep raking in the cash, earning $26.8 million in its second weekend and ending up in the top spot for the second time in as many weeks.
"Straight Outta Compton," the gangster rap group N.W.A. biopic has already passed $100 million after just two weeks at the box office, hitting an estimated $11.5 million through last weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The F. Gary Gray directed film about the rise of groundbreaking and high-influential gangster-rap group N.W.A., and co-produced by N.W.A. members Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, cost $29 million to make.
Ice Cube's son O'shea Jackson Jr. played the role of Ice Cube in the film. Dr. Dre accompanied the film with the release of the soundtrack "Compton," which is his first album in 16 years.
"Compton" has faced a number of underwhelming August releases during its reign. That, coupled with a brilliant marketing campaign, and glowing reviews have led to Universal's 13th weekend at the pinnacle of the North American box office. 2015, which been a record-breaking year for the studio, now has it with seven titles that have surpassed the $100 million mark. The Universal comedy "Trainwreck" also passed the milestone the past weekend.
New releases "Sinister 2," "Hitman: Agent 47" and "American Ultra" all performed below projections, and came behind "Compton" and Tom Cruise's fifth "Mission: Impossible" movie, which is already in its fourth week in theaters. "Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation" now has a domestic tally of $158 million.
As noted by The Hollywood reporter, the fore mentioned three new releases may have suffered from going for the same under 25 audience, as well as the fact that most schools are already back in session.
"Sinister 2" came in third place, with the Blumhouse production, Gramercy Pictures release making $10.6 million in its first weekend. The horror flick was made for $10 million and is directed by Ciargan Foy. The movie was projected to make $14 million.
