‘Straight Outta Compton’ Box Office News: Film Has Huge $56.1 Million Opening Weekend

Universal Studios' music biopic "Straight Outta Compton" exceeded all expectations on its way to having a gigantic opening weekend earning of $56.1 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The F. Gary Gray directed film about the rise of groundbreaking and high-influential gangster-rap group N.W.A., and co-produced by N.W.A. members Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, cost $29 million to make. For comparison, "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," by Guy Ritchie cost $80 million, and struggled with just $13.5 million in earnings from its opening weekend.

According to Buzzfeed News' Adam B. Vary, the $56.1 million opening weekend earning makes "Straight Outta Compton" the best domestic biopic debut "by far."

"Straight Outta Compton" rode the wave of its impressive Thursday preview screenings that made $4.96 million to follow it up with a $24.3 million Friday, which according to deadline is the fourth-highest opening day ever for an August release.

As Business Insider notes, "Straight Outta Compton," apart from grabbing the attention of moviegoers, has also struck a cultural nerve following the highly publicized incidents of police unrest in places like Ferguson, Missouri.

"It rally struck a chord with audiences," said Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak's senior media analyst.

Ice Cube's son O'shea Jackson Jr. played the role of Ice Cube in the film. Dr. Dre accompanied the film with the release of the soundtrack "Compton," which is his first album in 16 years.

As a note, "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.," which is a film about American and Russian spy agents during the Cold War, and stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, debuted in third place behind "Straight Outta Compton" and "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation."

As noted by Yahoo, according to Goldstein, the Warner Bros. PG-13-rated adaptation of the 1960s TV series failed to attract a significant younger audience, who are likely not familiar with the source material.
