'Steven Universe' Season 3 News: Show Creator Talks About Emmy-Nominated Episode, 'The Answer'
At last month's Comic-Con, "Steven Universe" creator Rebecca Sugar talked about the series and the possible reasons for its big following beyond its target demographic.
Just recently, The Wrap interviewed her again about the creative influences behind the show's Emmy-nominated episode, titled "The Answer," as well as some of the major events in season 3.
According to Sugar, they wanted to give Garnet the ultimate animated fairy tale love story that will represent all of the favorite animated fairy tale love stories of all time.
"We started by drawing influence from Lotte Reiniger, creator of the oldest surviving animated feature film, 'The Adventures of Prince Achmed,'" he said. The film was done with Reiniger's signature silhouette animation technique. He also added that "Sleeping Beauty" was a huge influence.
Sugar said that if there is any particular image from the episode that she's most proud of, it would be Garnet's first transformation, since that was the first thing she ever sketched for the episode.
Talking about which character that has been the most fun to develop this season, the creator said she's been enjoying focusing on Amethyst, who often took a back seat with Steven in the previous seasons.
"Amethyst tries to act like she doesn't care what everyone thinks, but she really cares, she's very nervous all of the time. But with Steven's support, that nervousness is gone, and that's Smoky! With that as a base we all worked together to make that come through, and to make a design that would work for Smoky as a big proud winner around Jasper, but also as a small excitable kid around Sardonyx" she said, pertaining to the designing of a new gem fusion like Smoky Quartz, which Amethyst and Steven will use to take down the villainous gem Jasper.
She also revealed that Jasper has a deep hate for herself because of her origins, unlike Peridot and Lapis who always believed they deserved better.
Towards the end of the interview, Sugar revealed that the next big arc will reveal the flaws and failings of Rose Quartz and how Steven deals with it.
"Steven Universe" airs every day at 7:00 P.M. on Cartoon Network.
