In a recent Q&A released, Barbara Wilson the producer of the popular gospel Annual Stellar Awards revealed how the organization went about booking mega super star Beyoncé to perform with Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland at this year's award show.
Barbara Wilson recently celebrated 30 years as the producer for the annual Stellar Awards-Hailed as "Gospel music's biggest night," The 30th Annual Stellar Awards recognized the year's most outstanding contributions in gospel music. In fact, it was Barbara who named and designed the first ever Stellar Award but, whether she's producing or writing for various TV or award shows, her long list of accomplishments and credits have proven that she is more than capable of running any show.
Once the Stellar Award 30-year celebration, in Las Vegas, NV, was over, Phyllis Caddell-M was able to sit down with the very detailed and professional Wilson to get the inside-scoop on what it takes to produce the show, how the surprise-opening act was chosen.

According to many, the highlight of the show was the much-buzzed-about performance of "Say Yes" by Michelle Williams featuring Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé. Was it your idea to have Destiny's Child on the show and to open?
The initial contact came to me from Michelle's record label via the VP at E-One. As the talks progressed, Don and the rest became involved so it became a collective decision including Beyoncé's people-Having them open the show was a no brainer.
How do you decide who performs on the show? I use several criteria to decide who performs on the show; i.e.,
- Talent - I look at their product (genre of gospel music)
- Performance - presentation, audience reaction, general look (choice of costume, hair, makeup) creative staging, musical arrangements
- Charting: Is the artist's music charting on Billboard, being played on radio, etc.
- How will this artist's performance add to the show? (I always look for that special performance that will add alook to the show. For example, the Hip Hop Collaboration.
And last, I consider an artist's character and popularity in the gospel community.
What is the biggest consideration when you're making the decisions for the show?
My biggest consideration when I'm making decisions for the show is the music - spirit. I go with my gut feeling in making final decisions. Of course I have to consider ratings, but I will often take a chance on a new artist because of my GUT.
