'Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Box Office News: Struggle In Its Chinese Market Bars Topping ‘Avatar’
J.J. Abrams' space sci-fi film "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" has proved its power when it comes to box office records locally and globally; however, there is one more area it could not awaken its Force, and that is China.
China is the second biggest movie market of the world, according to Bloomberg. However, it seems that "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" could not successfully penetrate the market, despite Lu Han set as the film's ambassador in the country.
In a full run in main theater chains in China, "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" is expected to yield as much as 1.5 billion yuan, which is equivalent to $230 million, when it opens on Dec. 9.
With the current stance of Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" in the Chinese market, it is assumed that the space sci-fi film would be challenged to surpass James Cameron's 2009 phenomenal film "Avatar," as the top grossing picture of all time.
Following its release in the United States on Dec. 18, 2015, "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" grossed more than $750 million locally and more than $786 in other countries, which account to more than $1.5 billion on a global scale, as per Box Office Mojo. It still needs more gas to overrun "Avatar's" domestic gross of more than $760 million.
Set 30 years following the events in "Star Wars: Return of Jedi," Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" stars Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, Oscar Isaac, Simon Pegg, Max von Sydow, and Domhnall Gleeson, among others.
Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" is still showing in theaters and it is followed by Rian Johnson's "Star Wars: Episode VIII," which hits theaters on May 26, 2017.
