'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' News: Disney Bosses Worried Movie Won’t Match Its Hype? [VIDEO]
Having spent nearly $4 billion on 'Star Wars,' Disney is certainly betting high on the Lucasfilm creation in 2012. Although it is being expected that the upcoming movie will generate plenty of money for Disney when it hits theaters in December, the executives at the Mouse House are now hoping that people would lower their expectations on the amount of money they would be making from 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.'
IB Times reports that Disney is said to have plans to make a new movie in the 'Star Wars' franchise every year after 'Star Wars: Episode VII.' According to reports, there will be a new movie trilogy in addition to the standalone 'Anthology' films beginning with 'Star Wars: Rogue One.' Nevertheless, it all depends on the successful launch of 'The Force Awakens,' directed by J.J. Abrams. Fortunately, with such a well-known franchise, it does not seem that anyone is too worried about the movie being a flop.
Citing Payl Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Rentrak, CNBC reports that considering its prime placement in the calendar year, 'The Force Awakens' will definitely break box-office records.
Dergarabedian explained, "I think, most certainly, it's going to break the all-time December opening weekend record," adding, "We've never had a movie in North America open with over $100 million in December and this will happen with the next 'Star Wars.'"
However, expectations notwithstanding, it now appears that Disney is worried that it is setting itself up to be something like a giant and will not be able to live up to its own hype. In order to help with that perception, Disney Chairman and CEO, Robert Iger, is now hoping to lower the expectations.
Entertainment Weekly reports that speaking at the company's quarterly earnings call, Iger said, "As enthusiastic as we are for what we know of the film, we have not seen a 'Star Wars' film - an original one - since 2005." He added, "And there are markets around the world that are less familiar with 'Star Wars' than, say, the United States, for instance."
To live up to the public's expectations of the movie being among the highest grossing movies of all time, 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' would have to overcome the current front runner, 2009's 'Avatar,' which earned over $2.78 billion from worldwide box office collections. In the meantime, 'Titanic' and 'Jurassic World' are positioned second and third, with $2.18 billion and $1.56 billion earnings, respectively.
