‘Star Wars’ Spin-Off Movie News: Oscar Nominated Actress Felicity Jones to Play Lead Role

Oscar nominated actress Felicity Jones is reportedly going to star in the next 'Star Wars' spin-off movie directed by Gareth Edwards, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The actress will be starring in the first of the two standalone movies that Disney and Lucas films are planning. Disney acquired Lucas films in 2012 for $4 billion. According to Variety, the studio is planning to have "Star Wars'-themed attractions at Disney parks across the globe.

Reportedly, Jones wasn't the only actress who was approached for the role. Among the list were Rooney Mara and Tatiana Maslany. Jones was nominated for a Best Actress at this year's Oscars for her role as Stephen Hawking's wife Jane Wilde in "The Theory of Everything.' However, she rose to fame with the movie "The Amazing Spider Man-2.'

Jones acted alongside James Franco and Jonah Hill in "True Story,' which was premiered at Sundance, and she is also said to be shooting for "A Monster Calls,' which is a family fantasy directed by J.A. Bayona that also stars Liam Neeson and Toby Kebbell.

Although, there is no clear picture as to what role Jones will be playing, reports suggest that she could play a young Princess Leia, according to The Telegraph.

On the cast are original cast members, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill alongside newcomers Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega.

LucasFilm has confirmed that the eighth and ninth episodes of "Star Wars" will open in 2017 and 2019. And it is also reported that Chris Weitz was hired just last week to write the script, according to Variety.
