'Star Wars Rebels' New Cast News: 'Buffy' Star Sarah Michelle Gellar Tapped for Season 2

The former vampire slayer is looking to turn in her wooden stake for light saber. Sarah Michelle Gellar, most known for her role in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," will be joining the cast of Disney XD's "Star Wars Rebels" for the show's second season.

On her Instagram account, Gellar posted a photo of her and Star Wars Rebels executive producer Dave Filoni. The photo was captioned "Anyone want to guess..."

Fans were in an upheaval, knowing that Gellar would soon be announced as a cast member for the highly successful animated series. Sure enough, Disney XD and Filoni confirmed that Gellar would join the cast. Her role however remains a mystery.

Gellar later tweeted, "That's right...guess who is starring on season of @starwarsrebels!!! Move over @RealFPJr cause @SarahMGellar is taking over!!"

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Filoni said, "We're thrilled to have Sarah Michelle Gellar on board for season two. She is a true 'Star Wars Rebels' fan and her passion undoubtedly comes through in the voice recording sessions."

Gellar joins her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. who plays Kanan Jarrus. Other cast members include Vanessa Marshall as Hera Syndulla, Steve Blum as Zeb Orrelios, Taylor Gray as Ezra Bridger, Tiya Sircar as Sabine Wren, Jason Isaacs as The Inquisitor and David Oyelowo as Agent Kallus.

"Star Wars Rebels" airs shortly after "The Clone Wars" animated series was canceled. It is set between the films "Revenge of the Sith" and "A New Hope" post Order 66.

Gellar has had voiceover roles in "Robot Chicken" and "TMNT." Season 2 of "Star Wars Rebels" will return sometime this year, probably in the Fall.
