'Star Trek 3' Rumors, News: Simon Pegg Clarifies Controversial Statement, Sparks Rumors of 3rd Film Instalment
In an interview with Radio Times, Simon Pegg made a comment that has rubbed a few people the wrong way. The statement was, "Nerd culture is the product of a late capitalist conspiracy, designed to infantilize the consumer as a means of non- aggressive control."
Since he received some backlash about the comment, Pegg has posted to his personal blog in order to clarify the comment.
He broke down his point so that it could be better understood, explaining that this feeling was his inspiration for Spaced and that it also carries over into Shaun the Dead and The World's End.
He stresses that he does not harbor any negativity towards geek culture, and that there are still some good films, including Mad Max: Fury Road and Ex Machina which were released this year.
At the same time, some people do agree with Pegg's notion that people are becoming obsessed with the wrong things, and that while it is not wrong to be passionate about movies, the passion for films has extended beyond and into a culture.
Many reporters may find that they are guilty of the same, feeding into a hype surrounding remakes of classically "nerdy" films or franchises.
For example, Matt Goldberg of Collider states that he agrees with Pegg for the above mentioned reasons. "...I'm as guilty of this as anyone because that comes with my job," said Goldberg.
He pointed to the example of people questioning the merits of the Star Trek 3 title, Star Trek Beyond, and says that he cannot blame them.
