‘Star Trek 3’ Plot Spoilers: Director Justin Lin Talks Creating Whole New Worlds & Species
The production of 'Star Trek 3' is scheduled to start in little over two weeks from now and Justin Lin, the director of the upcoming Sci-Fi film is thrilled to finally commence work on the third installment of the internationally popular franchise.
According to Latin Post, recently Lin was at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood to mold his hands on floor cement along with Zhao Wei and Huang Xiaoming, where he spoke to Deadline. He shared that he grew up in a family that loved 'Star Trek.'
It seems that, the Lin family, which owned a fish and chips restaurant in Anaheim just outside Disneyland, decided to eat their dinner very late with a view to watch the original 'Star Trek' series every night, which, in those days, was aired at 11 p.m.
Talking to Deadline, Lin said, "Every night, it was 'Star Trek' on Channel 13 in LA," adding, "That was my childhood. The only time I could hang out with my parents was by staying late. I was the 'Star Trek' kid."
Earlier, Lin directed four films of the 'Fast and the Furious' franchise, but decided to quit that franchise with a view to direct 'Star Trek 3.' When the original 'Star Trek' director J.J. Abrams jumped ship in order to be at the helm of a 'Star Wars' film, he called lin for the job in late 2014. "He asked me, 'Do you like 'Star Trek?' If you do, you should take this. Be bold and just go for it,'" Lin said.
While Abrams' take on the 'Star Trek' franchise was certainly impressive, Lin is convinced that "there is still a lot to be mined from these characters." in any case, as shown on the big screen, the team is yet embarked on its five-year mission, denoting that the storyline that was seen in the iconic TV show "hasn't been touched on yet," said Lin.
Talking to Deadline, Lin also left some hints regarding the script, which was written by Doug Jung and Simon Pegg. Reportedly, the writer duo did not borrow any plot points from previous 'Star Trek' episodes. Lin revealed, "It is all new and fresh," adding, "The Klingons, Romulans, and other species are great. But, it is time to go further. It has been fun to focus on creating whole new worlds and species."
In Abrams' film, audience saw the introduction of a young Captain James T. Kirk who required plenty of convincing prior to agreeing to join the Starfleet, where he later met McCoy, Spock, Uhura, and the remaining characters on the USS Enterprise. "Picking up where Abrams left off somehow sets up an opportunity for exploration," Lin said, adding, "The deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity."
'Star Trek 3' will hit theaters on July 8, 2016.
