Spotify News Update: SoundCloud Purchase Rumors Surface After Launch In Japan
Spotify has been busy in the news lately after launching its service Japan, the music streaming company is also reportedly looking to acquire SoundCloud.
According to the blog post, Spotify would be the first streaming service in Japan that will feature both ad-supported and free music, as well as an ad-free subscription service. Japanese consumers can try out the Premium service for about 980 yet each month.
Daniel Ek, Spotify CEO, said, "We're incredibly excited to launch Spotify with a uniquely Japanese music experience. With Spotify's revolutionary discovery and personalization features that fit your every mood, we aim to help people enjoy more music and connect more artists with fans than ever before."
The Spotify Japan launch will include a dense list of artists, either local or international, as well as a hsot of customization options like the shuffling playlist depending on one's favorite music, and a playlist of artists in your library.
In related news, Spotify is reportedly set on acquiring SoundCloud, although no details have emerged regarding the alleged deal. Based on previous reports, Spotify's interest in the company is nothing new although it hesitated on the $700 value of SoundCloud.
Twitter may likely reap the windfall after investing $70 million in SoundCloud back in June.
The news about Spotify's purchase of SoundCloud following its Japan launch had some pundits' heads scratching. Spotify is still lagging behind Amazon, Apple or Google in terms of solid customer base. So its business model is to offer free music then later cash in through add-ons. That model has resulted to constant tension with music artists.
