'Spongebob Movie' Box Office News: Film Takes Top Spot in Ticket Sales - Rakes in $56 Million
'The Spongebob Movie' arrived in theaters in a major way this weekend with its rise to the number one spot at the box office.
The movie based on the infectious aquatic sponge raked in $56 million this weekend toppling over the other two releases of 'Jupiter Ascending' and 'Seventh Son', both of which that didn't do too well.
The film starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis only raked in $19 million from 3,181 screens. 'Seventh Son' did even worse with $7.1 million.
'The Spongebob Movie' also finally knocked 'American Sniper' from its top spot after its fourth week reigning.
"Warner Bros.' 'American Sniper' continued to be a juggernaut, earning $24.2 million in its fourth week of wide release. The biopic about Navy SEAL Chris Kyle has pulled in $282.3 million domestically, making it the third-highest grossing 2014 release Stateside, behind 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy'," writes Variety.
Spongebob has been a longtime family-familiarized character, and with the lack of family films in the market, the movie was able to do very well. There's also such a wide variety of fans for the franchise now. Kids that were fans of the show growing up are now old enough to bring their kids to see it now.
Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures states:
"We got the faithful fans to show up, but we also had teenagers and 20-year-olds. It was able to do so well because it played to a wide age range. It was a combination of people who grew up with 'SpongeBob' and had affection for it, along with a campaign that introduced some fresh elements."
Next weekend the anticipated release of 'Fifty Shades of Grey' is expected to make big numbers.
