'Spider-Man' New Cast News: Marvel Taps Marisa Tomei for Aunt May Role
Recent news has suggested that Marvel may have found their new Aunt May if things turn out in their favor.
Variety has reported that the studio has tapped actress Marisa Tomei to play the titular aunt in the rebooted Spider-Man solo film. She would ofcourse be joined by the recently announced Tom Holland as the signature hero. Sony and Marvel currently have no response on the casting decision.
Aunt May plays a critical role in the Spider-Man lineage, as she's left to raise the young Peter Parker with his Uncle Ben after his parents leave him in their care.
"The job marks a new direction for Tomei, who generally sticks to dramas like "The Ides of March" and "The Wrestler," or romantic comedies like "Crazy Stupid Love" and "My Cousin Vinny" (which landed her an Oscar), rather than studio tentpoles. She can be seen next in "Trainwreck" alongside Amy Schumer and is currently filming "The Big Short" with Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling. Tomei will also have a recurring role in the second season of Fox's hit "Empire." She is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment," writes Variety.
'Cop Car' director Jon Watts has also been enlisted to helm the anticipated project, however the studio is still in contention to find a writer to aid him in the writing process.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige will be producing alongside Amy Pascal.
Despite Holland being scheduled to appear in 'Captain America: Civil War' in his first cameo as the webslinger, Tomei would likely first appear on screen in the solo film set for 2017.
