'Spectre' News, Cast Rumors: Leaked Email Reveals Sony Chief Favors Idris Elba as Next James Bond
A leaked email from Amy Pascal, chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, suggests that she wants 'The Wire' star Idris Elba to feature as 007 in the next James Bond movie, possibly encouraging the British actor to become accustomed to ordering his Martinis shaken, and not stirred.
IB Times quotes a report in The Daily Beast, which claims that Amy Pascal sent an email to Elizabeth Cantillon, a former Columbia Pictures executive vice president (Production) on Jan. 4, 2015, simply saying, "Idris should be the next Bond." It is worth noting that Columbia Pictures distributes the Bond films.
For some time, there has been speculation that 42-year-old Elba was a possible candidate for the role of James Bond, when the present Bond, Daniel Craig, leaves the movie franchise. Interestingly, already there is a Facebook group named "We Want Idris Elba For James Bond" with 30,000 members.
Currently, Craig is busy filming the next Bond film titled 'Spectre" in Italy. While "Spectre" is the 24th installment of James Bond franchise, this is Craig's fourth screen outing as the archetypal British spy. According to The Guardian, Craig is contracted to feature in one more Bond film after "Spectre."
Meanwhile, Monica Bellucci, the 50-year-old Italian actress and model who is also the oldest Bond girl, will be James Bond's love interest in "Spectre."
Elba is well-known for his performance in the gritty HBO drama 'The Wire.' He has also appeared in several high-profile Hollywood movies, including 'Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom,' and 'Pacific Rim.'
