SpaceX Launch News: SpaceX Resupplies ISS with Dragon Capsule, Mice, Coffee, & More

On Wednesday, at 4:10 pm Eastern Time, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket with a Dragon capsule to the International Space Station.

This is the sixth one that SpaceX has launched under its contract with NASA. The Dragon reached the station successfully at 6:55 am today. It contains supplies for the astronauts and some other interesting cargo.

One thing that the astronauts received were "mousetronauts," or mice which were sent by the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space as part of a research project. The mice will be studied for a prolonged period of time to see how microgravity impacts their bones and muscles.

With the information from this study, they hope to take steps towards developing medicines to treat osteoporosis, muscle wasting disease and other similar conditions.

Synthetic muscles being created by Ras Labs also arrived at the station. The synthetic muscles are being developed so that better robots can be created for working in pace. Astronauts also received a coffee machine called ISSPresso.

The machine will actually be able to brew hot coffee for astronauts who have had to mix a dry powder with water until this point. The dragon also has 14 imaging satellites coming from Planet Labs.

The satellites will be launched from Nanoracks' deployment system and take pictures of the Earth's surface that will be exclusively for Planet Labs customer use.

A final interesting experiment sent to space was sent by three sisters called "Chicks in Space." The group's experiment is called "The Garden of ETON," and it is a hydroponic garden which aims to show that hydroponic farming is compatible with microgravity.

If the experiment is successful, it can be used to grow fresh produce for astronauts and the International Space Station.
