South Australia Wildfires Latest News January 2015: Thousands Flee in Victoria from Dryland Flames
New reports claim that wildfires have recently destroyed six homes in South Australia and the Victoria states. The dry conditions and temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit were causing headaches for firefighters who are battling the blazes. In the opinion of officials, it will take time to get the fires under control.
As per reports, the worst of the fires were in the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, where the flames had destroyed five homes and put hundreds of others at risk. People of 19 communities had been asked to evacuate since there are predictions of shift in the wind directions which could worsen the situation.
It seems nearly 2,000 firefighters were trying to battle the blazes across the state from both the ground as well as the air and over a dozen aircraft are dumping water onto the flames. In neighboring Victoria State, firefighters had been able to control over 300 fires with only one still considered a danger. One home was destroyed in the blaze in the western Victoria town of Moyston.
There were predictions of light rains, but if accompanied by wind and lightning, it could only aggravate the condition in the region. The rain would not be adequate to quell the flames, and on the other hand, lightning could spark fresh fires.
Incidentally, wildfires are common across much of Australia during the summer months. On that note, in 2009, nearly 173 people were killed in fires and over 2000 homes were destroyed in Victoria.
