New York Jets NFL 2015 News: Jets Source Says QB ‘Geno [Smith] Deserved Punch to the Jaw’

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith is out six to 10 weeks with a broken Jaw after a locker room altercation led to him being punched by since released linebacker IK Enemkpali. But now, details are surfacing that suggest the quarterback had it coming.

As noted by previous reports, the altercation stemmed from Smith refusal to pay Enemkpali $600 for a plane ticket to the latter's football camp (which Smith missed due to personal reasons).

ESPN analyst and former NFL safety Ryan Clark said that Smith was not only unapologetic about the money owed, but had put his finger in Enemkpali's face and said, "you're not going to do anything about it."

"Geno deserved it," source, cited by Yahoo Sports, who was present at the time of the altercation said.

Frank Schwab of Shutdown Corner points out that what's more curious is not the matter of Smith deserving to be punched or not. What's interesting, according to him, is that nobody in the locker room appeared to be in any rush to defend the quarterback.

"I guess just knowing the story I felt people should know he hasn't sucker punched like an innocent bystander watching a fight. He was in 1," Clark tweeted.

Enemkpali has since released a statement Tuesday saying, "I apologize to the Jest organization, coaches, teammates and fans. "Geno and I let our frustration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation, I deeply regret and apologize for my actions. It was never my intention to harm anyone. I appreciate the opportunity I had with the Jets."

Jets coach Todd Bowles, who immediately waived Enemkpali also expressed his displeasure with his quarterback. "It takes two to tango - one to throw a punch, but two to tango."

"My goal is to heal quickly and get back to playing with my teammates, so I can be the best QB possible for the NY Jets," Smith said in a statement.
