Sony VAIO Pro 13 Review: Ultralight Laptop, Heavy on Features

The Sony VAIO Pro 13 is a super light and mighty device that is heavy on the features. Weighing only 2.34 lbs (940 g), the latest laptop from the Japanese tech behemoth runs on Windows 8 OS and comes with a 13-inch display. It has extended battery life and launches programs at "lightening speed" with its Haswell processor.

Haswell devices are known to have longer battery life that's similar to that of Apple's MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

Anandtech reports that Sony VAIO Pro 13's battery life is remarkable and the device can manage about eight hours on a 37Wh battery. The device may be attached to the external sheet battery to increase its battery life two-fold. In fact, it can run from the time the user wakes up to point when he or she retires to bed, all without losing power.

What is more remarkable is the fact that the Sony VAIO Pro 13 is possibly the lightest 13.3" laptop of its genre in the market today. Weighing just 2.34 pounds, roughly 50 percent more, compared to the usual 10" tablet, whose performance is much weaker. In comparison, the MacBook Pro 13' (2013 edition) weighs 3.46 pounds, while the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro is 3.06 pounds.

The battery life and design of Sony VAIO Pro 13 is mainly attributed to Intel's Haswell ULT processors, which transition quicker and have somewhat lower TDPs. Anandtech, on the other hand, attributes the power of the laptop to its integrated voltage regulator. It's important to note that Sony has also optimized the firmware, which gives the Intel processor the chance to run at full potential.

In addition to the outstanding mobility of VAIO Pro 13, Sony includes a good 1080P IPS display, and it is said that the keyboard is very comfortable to type on.

The Sony VAIO Pro 13 starts at $2,599.99 from the Sony store and operates on Window 8 OS Pro 64-bit. The device starts with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD memory.
