Sony SmartEyeglass Specs, Features, News: Pre-Orders Accepted in UK & Germany for New Device

Even as Google has been working to re-introduce the Google Glass, which was received poorly by the consumers, Japanese tech manufacturer Sony is now introducing its own smart eyewear - dubbed Sony SmartEyeglass, with a view to flourish in this new field of technology.

According to Christian Today, Sony will be introducing its SmartEyeglass and the company is already accepting pre-orders for wearable device's Developer Edition, which is also dubbed SED-E1, in the United Kingdom and Germany. This edition of Sony SmartEyeglass will be made available in Japan and the United States on March 10. However, the company does not plan to launch a non-Developer edition of the device till 2016.

The SmartEyeglass carries a price tag of £620 ($840 or ¥100,000). This wearable device can be connect wirelessly to compatible smartphones, displaying data over "augmented reality lenses" and also into the line of sight of the wearer without blocking his or her vision, thereby differing from the Google Glass, which utilizes its frames as the display.

According to Sony, it wants the tech community to "imagine true augmented reality" as well as "a world of knowledge in front of [their] eyes" using the SmartEyeglass. The tech glasses come with chunky black frames along with a dangling black cable that needs to be buttoned up to the clothing of the user.

Sony unveiled the SmartEyeglass at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2015 in January and promoted the device for professional use. Since the wearer will be able to use apps like Twitter, Gmail and Facebook, in addition to sports and tourism apps on the device, many are wondering whether the Sony SmartEyeglass being readied for mass consumption.

The SmartEyeglass also come with motion and brightness sensors in addition to a microphone as well as a 3-megapixel camera. The device also has a handheld controller that connects the glasses with a cable. However, the smart eyewear will not function unless the user is in a room where the temperature ranges between 5°C and 35°C - neither very hot, nor very cold.

As far as the specs are concerned, the battery of the Sony SmartEyeglasses is somewhat poor and can last only up to 150 minutes on a single charge.
