'Sonic Mania' News: Sega Releases Old-School 2D Side-Scroller, Celebrates 25 Years Of Iconic Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog just turned 25, and for all of the gamers and enthusiasts out there, good news are in store. According to Inverse, as part of the character's 25th anniversary celebrations, Sega has announced that there would be a "completely 2D 'Sonic Mania.'"
"Sonic Mania" is an upcoming side-scrolling platform game developed by Headcannon and PagodaWest Games and published by Sega. Even though it will be available on the most graphically up to date consoles that we have today, the game will still be going back to its roots and will be offering a true 2D experience.
In a feature story by BBC, Takeshi Iizuka, current head of the Sonic team, was asked why there is still a room for Sonic in today's gaming world where the likes of GTA and Fallout rule the industry.
"In film there are realistic films, war films but also Pixar and Disney that's a really dreamy and fantastical world that they draw up - they are completely independent genres and they can co-exist and there's a fan base for both types of film," Iizuka answered.
Also, as part of the celebration, "Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice" will be released next month and there would also be a new game that will come out in the latter part of next year. As for "Sonic Mania," the game will be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows in the early part of 2017.
What do you think of this old school, reminiscent video game? Do you think it would survive the gaming industry that we have today?
