Smartwatches 2015: Comparison Reveals Looks, Size Most Important

There are only a few smartwatch brands that really standout as serious competitors in the market. Just like any other high-tech gadgets, there are several main factors that determine the popularity of a smartwatch brand among consumers.

These factors include: marketing hype, price, functionality, size, and aesthetic. Apparently, most consumers put higher value on size and aesthetics. When it comes to functionality, most of the top-ranking smartwatch brands are virtually at par with each other, but they significantly differ in size and aesthetics.

It can be argued that aesthetics is very subjective or arbitrary but size is a different thing. Many consumers still prefer smartwatches that have the traditional sizes and appearance of conventional watches rather than the ones that have bulky and futuristic looks.

The various factors previously mentioned influence consumer decisions in choosing among the currently popular smartwatches like the Samsung Gear S, Motorola Moto 360, LG G Watch R, and Pebble Steel.

The scale might have been tipped when Apple Watch entered the market. The much anticipated Apple smartwatch is currently sold at a starting price of $349. This price is not significantly far from the prices of the other competing smartwatch brands.

Based on the official specifications of Apple Watch, it seems that the designers got it right. In terms of size, the smartwatch is available in 38 mm and 42 mm. These are almost exactly as the traditional watch sizes.

Other smartwatches are a bit bigger. In comparison, the Gear S is the largest of the bunch measuring at 39.8 x 58.3 x 12.5 mm.
