Smartboy News: Pre-order for Device Available; Retail Price Starting At $59.99

By now, most people already know that the April Fool's joke about a device that will turn your Android phone into a Gameboy was actually real.

People can already pre-order the Smartboy development kit on the Hyperkin website, which retails for $59.99, according to the latest news.

In the website's description, the Smartboy device can be attached to the Android phones which will immediately turn the device into a mobile gaming apparatus. "Included in the kit is an open source serial app and firmware, which will enable developers of all kinds to advance Hyperkin's current build toward a retail-ready model," it said.

Fans would really welcome this bit of news, said Digital Trends, because with the novel device, the Smartboy allows users to wax nostalgic while playing the classic games like "Pokémon Blue," "Pokémon Yellow," and "Pokémon Red." There are also other titles as well like the "Bomberman" or "Zelda" that could be available.

"For anyone nostalgic for the '90s this device is a dream come true as it can be hard to get your hands on an original Game Boy or Game Boy Color, which were discontinued a long time ago," it said.

The Flickering Myth, meanwhile, shared the news about the Smartboy having its own rechargeable battery pack that will already give the user about five hours to fiddle around with their favorite games.

The Smartboy is simple enough, with the familiar D-pad, the start and select buttons as well as the two action buttons. Based on the news reports, the Smartboy development kit will be available in December of 2016.
