Sleeping Giants Frontman Tommy Green Finds Jesus Through Affair; Woman's Husband Commits Suicide and Tells Singer to 'Stick Around'
Bad Christian interviewed lead singer Tommy Green of Christian hardcore band Sleeping Giant on the Bad Christian podcast where he shared his amazing testimony of failed marriages, suicide, and finding Jesus in the unlikeliest of situations.
As a teen, Green moved to California and became part of the Christian hardcore scene even though he was not a believer. Almost right away he found himself in trouble.
After graduating from high school, he had an affair with a married woman. They fell in love, and the woman's husband committed suicide because of it. The husband knew how much Tommy meant to his wife and asked him to take care of her in his suicide letter.
At 18-years-old he had to live with the haunting words of a suicide note that he felt partially responsible for, "Please stick around, I know that she cares about you" it said.
Eventually they got married, and had a baby. After a few years the cycle began again. She did it to him with one of his friends, and what made it worse was that it was with someone from the same Christian music scene as him. The new beau sent people after Green with the intent to kill him. He managed to escape, but was at a crossroads with nowhere to turn. "I was so afraid and so alone," he admitted, "God wasn't a concept at the time."
Green confronted the man who was stealing his wife from him to try and stop him from making the same mistake he did.
"I know exactly how you feel. I know exactly what you're doing...Please don't do this," Green told him. However, it was in vain and again he had nothing. "That's when I met God...I met Jesus. He was like the bridegroom that had lost his bride. And all he wanted was for her to pick Him, and she didn't it."
He decided he would test the waters of Christianity by trying out love and forgiveness and avoiding anger and loneliness. Christians in the scene were letting him down so he doubted God. He tried to just continue to love his wife despite everything that was going on, and was going to give Jesus a try all the way.
"I'm going to do what he said to do, and see what happens," said Green, "Maybe God is actually present and helping me give a love that I don't understand."
It never worked out with his ex-wife, but he has since remarried and has two more kids. He is enjoying the blessings of his family and career as a Christian man doing his best to understand and serve God. "My wife is beautiful, my kids are awesome."
"I just want people to see what's changed my life," he said as he admits being in a band and touring, sleeping in vans, and getting crazy on stage is far from normal or easy. This is how he ministers and reaches people for the Lord.
Green's takeaway from everything is that people need someone who is willing to understand them and accept them for who they are. He was able to find that in Jesus' arms and turn his life around.
