Singer Lesley Gore News: 'It's My Party' Singer Dies at the Age of 68
The woman who almost did everything, finally bid to rest last Monday after battling cancer. Lesley Gore was 68. The 'It's My Party' and 'You Don't Own Me' singer died at a New York Hospital according to her partner Lois Sasson and several news agencies.
It is a sad day to party, as many are indeed heartbroken that the singer who inspired many to finish college first before going all out on her career finally said goodbye. Gore grew up in New Jersey and just upon reaching junior high school in1963 the singer already released her popular hit song 'It's My Party'.
But despite the obvious instant fame and fortune, Gore chose to take a step back in her promising career as an artist and went to college in 1968. Gore graduated with a degree in English and American Literature at Sarah Lawrence College in New York.
"I certainly don't regret going to college, even though it meant sidelining my career," she told the United Press International (UPI) news wire in 1969. "To me, as a human being, it was worth it," she added. The singer and songwriter apparently enjoyed her time studying, "I've had enough of roommates in college," she told UPI.
Probably learning a lot in a school that specializes in women studies Gore then paved her way back to being a singer and released a feminist-themed hit song 'You Don't Own Me'. The song was even featured in another hit famous film, 'The First Wives Club' in 1996.
"I recorded 'You Don't Own Me' in 1964," Gore said in a cameo video. "It's hard for me to believe, but we're still fighting for the same things we were then," Gore explained as she supported the feminist's cause.
Meanwhile, Gore was also known to have had a long relationship with her partner Sasson. Apparently, the two have been together for 33 years. In a previous interview with the New York Times, Gore revealed her thoughts on being gay.
"I did that really as a result of meeting a lot of young gay people in the Midwest who really had nothing to relate to," she said as she came out publicly in her previous hosting in the 'In the Life' LGBT news series on public television. "At least I felt this program is presenting them with some options."
