Showtime TV Series Premiere News: 'Happyish' and 'Penny Dreadful' Slated for Early Premieres
New reports are claiming that the Showtime series Happyish and Penny Dreadful will be making early debuts on the network. Happyish will be premiering this weekend, and Penny Dreadful will air its second season premiere next month.
Happyish stars Steve Coogan, Kathryn Hahn and Bradley Whitford. The show is a comedy that focuses on whether the pursuit of happiness is a foolish concept and "settling for happyish is the best one can expect."
The series was supposed to star Philip Seymour Hoffman, but he was replaced by Coogan after Hoffman passed away last year. Penny Dreadful stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Harry Treadaway.
The show can be categorized as a gothic horror. It will feature Patti LuPone as a guest star in this season. Penny Dreadful incorporates stories from varies pieces of gothic literature and rewrites them as something unique and new.
Penny Dreadful is executive produced and was created by John Logan. Sam Mendes also acts as an executive producer for the show.
The title of the show is a reference to the penny dreadfuls, which are a type of cheap British fiction from the 1800s with sensational subject matter. The series references several characters from 19th century Irish and British fiction.
Happyish was created by Shalom Auslander, and is about a jaded ad executive in his 40s who is disillusioned both with the change in direction of the firm that he works at, which is more geared toward young people and many other things in life.
Fans were worried about the show after the original clip with Philip Seymour Hoffman as the lead actor was popular among critics, but the show had to be revamped after Hoffman's passing.
