'Sherlock' Season 4 Release Date News: Producers Confirm Series Premiere

The famed BBC series 'Sherlock' does not yet have a specific release date, but the network is confident fans will see it back on the air in 2016.

Instead of releasing any news on the upcoming season, the network has been chosen to tease their expected Christmas Day Special in their new promo.

"It's in the news that a Christmas Day Special is expected to air this year to feature Sherlock's arch nemesis Moriarty (Andrew Scott) and reveal as to how he appeared to have escaped his own death by shooting himself in the face," writes Crossmap.

The production for the Christmas Day Special has begun this month, and is rumored to be released on Christmas Day 2015.

However, a synopsis of the special hasn't yet surfaced either.

"So far, the confirmed cast includes leads Cumberbatch and Freeman and regulars Amanda Abbington as Mary Watson, Louise Brealey as Molly Hooper and Jonathan Aris as Anderson. We can expect more of the regulars to turn up as filming progresses, including the likes of Una Stubbs and Rupert Graves," writes Latin Times.

On that note, Mark Gatiss, producer for the Christmas Day Special commented:

"It's not a Christmas special. It's a special, but we honestly have no idea when it might be on. We're making it in January but we don't know when it's going to be on. Christmas would be nice. The scheduling is not up to us. I don't think even the schedulers know [laughing]."

In regards to the production of Season 4, the producer had this to say:

"I can officially tell you that we are moving closer to agreeing some dates to shoot. If that sounds like a party line, it is. That is proper progress because Ben and Martin and Steven are so busy, but actually trying to get everybody to interlock is ... we have made significant progress."
