'Sherlock' Season 4 News: Preview For Christmas Special Released At Comic-Con [VIDEO]

The highly anticipated Christmas special episode of the famed 'Sherlock' series has finally released their first preview for Comic-Con.

This special will set actor Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the Victorian-era, somewhere outside of the series' continuity. The location and characters will all be represented in the time period, bringing forth a more classical take on the allusive detective.

"We discovered there was some precedent for doing Sherlock in the Victorian era," executive producer Steven Moffat told EW. "When we first did Sherlock, press asked how can Sherlock possibly survive in world with an iPhone? and when doing the Victorian, the press came in and said how can he do this without his iPhone? [...]It's very much the show you know. It's the Sherlock as you know it, but in the correct era. It's one of the best ones we've made. I think it's really terrific."

Moffat goes on to tease the upcoming fourth season of the show which is set for an unprecedented date. While the season is still being written, he claims that it will have "shattering emotionally draining you'll-never-be-the-same-again cliffhangers" that will "sucker punch you into emotional devastation."

He also teases the possible return of Sherlock's love interest Irene Adler stating he doesn't know if she'll be back.

"We actually don't know how that night worked out," Moffat said. "I did write a version of it ... To be honest, I think they never saw each other again, is the truth-but they both smile once a day when they think of each other."

Fans can expect the special spin-off episode to air this Christmas.
