Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Confirms Black Adam Role in DC Comics 'Shazam' Movie
'Hercules' star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson recently went on social media in order to reveal his upcoming role in the upcoming 'Shazam' movie.
"Kneel at his feet or get crushed by his boot." My honor to become.. #BlackAdam #TheAntiHero #DCComics," wrote Johnson on his Twiter page on September 3.
Johnson was previously rumored to play as Billy Batson's alter ego Shazam (the DC superhero who was formerly known as Captain Marvel), but he has now confirmed that he will appear as the aforementioned hero's greatest arch nemesis, Black Adam, in the upcoming film.
"It's the interpretation of a character from DC Comics. It's the story of Shazam, but I can't say if I'm playing Shazam or Black Adam... In this case in particular, I believe we will do [the part] justice. I'm putting my heart and soul into this role," said The Rock according to a report by the Comic Book Movie website.
The Rock's new character (Black Adam) is in constant conflict with Shazam after he returned to Earth and discovered he was replaced by the noble hero. This happened only after the former ancient Egyptian Prince Teth-Adam got power hungry and killed the Pharaoh 5,000 years ago, which resulted in Adam being banished by the same wizard (who shares the same name as the protagonist Shazam) for five millenniums to the farthest planet in the galaxy.
The 10-time WWE (WWF) and WCW champion has always made it known in the past that he wanted to star as a superhero and/or a super villain in a DC or Marvel movie.
"Someone's gonna get it...," wrote The Rock on his Twitter Page on July 24, 2014 along with an illustration of Superman, Black Adam and Shazam (aka Captain Marvel) about to battle each other in the drawing.
Now Johnson's dreams of playing as one of his favorite DC characters will finally come true when the film arrives in theaters in at least two years from now.
"We Love Dwayne and have had nothing but success with him over the years," said Toby Emmerich, President and COO of New Line in a statement, according to Variety.
"When I look at Dwayne both off screen and on screen, he is such a larger than life character and it just made perfect sense to me that we put him in a DC comic movie. You look at these comic book characters and they have this certain swag and charisma that Dwayne carries with him where ever he is so that's why this always made sense."
