'Shazam!' Cast News: Dwayne Johnson Talks About His Role as DC Villain Black Adam

In an upcoming issue of Total Film Magazine, Dwayne Johnson expands on his role as Black Adam in the anticipated 'Shazam!' film.

The news of his casting came to us last year and consequently delighted many DC fans as this will be the first time the action star will have been adapted in a superhero film. This is clearly the new trend for any actor that wants to remain relevant.

In discussing his role, Johnson explains what we can expect from his portrayal:

"I think Black Adam is going to grow into becoming an anti-hero. It's all written within the spirit of respecting and paying homage to the comics. As we know, Black Adam started out as a slave. When he's given the powers, he utilised them. Then in the wake of his powers, tragedy strikes, which turns his sentiment and tone in terms of psychology."

Johnson also confirmed that 'Shazam!' will stay within the DC cinematic world that is currently being established.

"It was all agreed that the worlds are all interconnected... One day you will see Black Adam go at it with Superman or Batman or any of the DC characters. But that said, there's a great independence to Black Adam from the DC world, allowing us to inject, not only viciousness, but also winking humor."

As impressive as this sounds, there is still a long way to go before Johnson's character enters that universe. 'Shazam!' is slated to release in 2019, and the fight scenes he describes may not come until years after that.

The actor who will eventually play the hero Shazam hasn't even been announced. Johnson got picked up fairly early.

'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' will be the first DC film to officially kick off the cinematic universe in 2016.
