'Shanghai Dawn' New Movie News: Third Entry in Kung Fu Franchise Announced By MGM

12 years after the release of 'Shanghai Knights,' MGM has finally announced the release of the third movie in the comedic franchise, 'Shanghai Dawn.'

For those that may not know, Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson started the 'Shanghai' series back in 2000 with the release of 'Shanghai Noon.'

The movies saw very successful releases with their unique spin on the western comedy genre. Chan played Chon Wang, a former imperial guard, while Wilson played a slick talking cowboy named Roy O' Bannon.

They are both confirmed to be reprising their roles in 'Shanghai Dawn.'

"The film came on the heels of the successful buddy cop comedy Rush Hour, which teamed Chan with comedic actor Chris Tucker, refreshing the odd-couple formula that had been proven successful by films such as 48 Hours, with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte, and Lethal Weapon, starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Shanghai Noon blends elements of the buddy-cop genre with western and martial arts influences. The 1971 film Red Sun, starring Charles Bronson and Toshir? Mifune, is a notable film that previously blended martial arts elements into the western backdrop," writes Tracking Board.

Jonathan Glickerman has been announced to produce the film, but at this time there are no directors or writers attached.

A plot or release date is also yet to be announced, however more information should be released in due time.

"Despite changing directors between Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights from Tom Dey to David Dobkin, one of the constants that contributed to the box office success of the franchise was the writing. Writing partners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar - who famously co-developed the Superman inspired television show Smallville - are responsible for that. However, with the recent news breaking of Shanghai Dawn finally moving forward after all this time, and no official subsequent announcement about Gough and Millar returning the write the movie, this could lend to an entirely different kind of Shanghai movie. Or, there might just be a few contractual kinks that need to be worked out before MGM announces that the writing duo will once again take the helm of a Shanghai film," writes Cinema Blend.
