Sevilla vs Barcelona Recap, News: Sevilla Stay Undefeated at Home, 2-2 Draw Final Score
Sevilla remained unbeaten at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan coming back from two goals down to battle to a 2-2 draw against La Liga leaders Barcelona; and in the process, turned the La Liga title race wide open.
Barca looked to maintain their four-point advantage with a win, after Real Madrid beat Eibar earlier in the day. And they looked poised to claim their three points after spectacular efforts by both Lionel Messi and Neymar within the first 30 minutes gave the Camp Nou club a seemingly comfortable 2-0 lead.
But seven minutes before the half closed, Ever Banega managed to slice the lead in half. Barcelona looked to be able to hang on the lead, but with just six minutes left in the match, Gerard Pique made a crucial error that Sevilla took full advantage of with a Kevin Gameiro equalizer.
The draw shrank Barcelona's lead over Real Madrid to just two points, while Sevilla kept their Champions League hopes alive.
Said Ivan Rakitic, "We're a bit mad at ourselves. We couldn't win after we worked very hard. We knew it's not easy here. Now, we should keep going."
"We were clearly better in the first half, played well. Second half was more balanced, both had chances. We paid for our mistakes," said Luis Enrique.
Andres Iniesta set up Luis Suarez beautifully early in the second half, but the Uruguay forward's strike was off. Messi also looked to be on his way for his 400th career goal for Barcelona, but a great tackle by Krychowiak dispossessed the Argentine.
Carlos Bacca nearly scored the equalizer, but had a terrible miss inside Barcelona's area firing his shot over the crossbar with just one man to beat. Jeremy Mathieu had a stunning effort miss as well when he fired a shot from the Sevilla area.
Messi's beautiful goal in the first half gave him is 399th score for Barcelona.
