According to a report in IB Times, Williams had been endeavoring to complete the calendar Grand Slam, but was surprisingly overcome in three sets. Had she had achieved the impressive feat; Williams would have become the sixth player in history to win all four grand slams in one year.

Following Vinci's victory, William's fans took to social media to articulate their shock as well as to blame the "Young Money" star for the disaster. In fact, Drake was present at the match and his track "Hold On, We're Going Home" was played multiple times as Williams competed.

Some fans claimed that the 33-year-old Williams was not in her best form and off her game owing to their alleged romance, while others maintained that the rapper presence on the court proved to be a bane. Meanwhile, Williams has been romantically linked to the Canadian rapper in recent weeks after someone snapped them piling on the PDA during a romantic dinner date in Cincinnati on Aug. 23.
